Photoshop Assignment: Promotional Poster for “Lord of the Flies”

In “Lord of the Flies” Photoshop Assignment, both Cameron Bellamy and I demonstrated the communication and interpersonal skills required to work effectively as a team. We listened to each others ideas, asked questions, offered suggestions and we both participated fully. All our interactions were respectful and working together was easy and comfortable. We decided on our approach by brainstorming ideas, evaluating each one and coming to consensus on our design. Roles and responsibilities were clearly assigned, completed to the best of our ability and commitments to deadlines were kept.  We worked well together and had no conflicts. The final product is an attractive poster for the production of “Lord of the Flies” and demonstrates our skills with Photoshop.

Assignment: Evaluate a Business-Oriented Website

For the evaluation of a business-oriented website, I chose to look at a poorly designed website for the company Video Sonic.  This company failed to show their product and service in usable or pleasing way. In my analysis, I identified weaknesses in all areas of good web design. The site failed to make navigation easy and possible.  The large amount of noise and colour on the site made focusing on any product or service difficult. The site felt scrambled and did not follow normal conventions. There was a lack of white space. The site did not make it easy to determine what was clickable since underlining was used both for emphasis and for links. I believe that my analysis showed that I have q good understanding of good web site design for products and services sold online.

Assignment:  Shot-by-Shot Analysis

I chose the film “The Shawshank Redemption” for the shot-by-shot analysis assignment.  I analyzed 69 shots for approximately the first ten minutes of the film. For each shot, I identified the length in seconds, camera movement, camera angle, distance to subject and the type of transition using film terminology and basic concepts.  I also evaluated the lighting and the impact of the shot to the plot.  The level of detail involved gave me an opportunity to demonstrate my understanding of the scientific concepts of camera work, film and editing.

 Assignment: Outdoor Ed. Yearbook Page

In the process of making the Outdoor Education Yearbook page, I was faced with a number of challenges. To select the pictures for Grade Nine, I took into consideration the lighting, the original image size, the subject of the photo and whether it was appealing. Once I selected the individual photos, I went through the process of using Photoshop to size the photo and ensure that it met the requirement of 300 pixels per inch image resolution.  Once this was complete, I inserted the photos into photo frames using Indesign.  For each photo I ensured the photo fitted the frame proportionally. Once the layout was complete, I had developed an appealing, printable. This project showed my understanding of the design processes required for professional looking print layout.

Photoshop Assignment:  Photo Manipulation

For this assignment I chose a photograph that I had taken of a skateboard park.  The assignment was to take the photo and manipulate it to make it more appealing. I did this by enhancing the colour and making some aspects of the image black and white. Another tool that I used was the Spot Healing tool which fixes areas of the photo that are undesirable. The last tool that I used was the Lasso tool to create a duplicate of a skateboarder in the background.  I believe that this assignment shows my skill with Photoshop tools and creativity that made the picture more attractive.

Assignment:  Video Assignment

The project that required the greatest level of project management was the video assignment. In this assignment, we needed to work effectively as a team and we needed to follow project management practices. We began the process with the pre-production part of the assignment which included the creation of the pitch, script and storyboard. By doing this I felt that when we were ready to move into production, even though we did not follow the script and storyboard completely it gave us a good idea of possible camera angles and actions. Another important part of the process was teamwork and assignment of roles and responsibilities. While working as a team it is important that everyone has a task that contributes to the final product. Having different points of view contributes to different perspectives on the creation of the film. Through it became clear that project management is required and is an important step in producing communications media products.
